(If you do not wish to have your picture on
this website, just email me and I will remove you.) Our journey started from Au Train, Michigan. From
there we rode to frozen Munising Falls, just outside the town of Munising,
MI. The falls are about 75 feet high. Then we crossed the ice over to Grand
Island, where we circumnavigated the entire island. The island is chocked
full of beautiful scenes overlooking Lake Superior (otherwise known as
Gitchee Gumee by the native Ojibway). Notice the ice curtains hanging from
the Grand Island sea cliffs. Average height of the red sandstone cliffs are
about 100'.... After several hours on the Island, we crossed the ice back to the
"mainland" and ventured into Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore where we
checked out the rock outcropping called "Miner's Castle". The sandstone
cliffs we're standing on are about 200' above the water and go straight down
into the water about 50'.... Lake Superior is by far, the cleanest, deepest
and wildest of the Great Lakes and the clarity of the water rivals that of
any alpine lake. There are many shipwrecks along this coast, thus an
underwater preserve was created. If you're into cold water diving (water
doesn't get much above 55 degrees in the summer), this is the place for
you!! Our next stop was another frozen waterfall: Miner's Falls. This picture
doesn't do it justice! We spend Friday night in Grand Marias, MI, a quaint little seaside town
just east of the National Lakeshore. Saturday, Neil took a day trip to
Tahquamenon Falls State Park. These falls are the second largest falls east
of the Mississippi (ok, we don't need to mention the biggest!). The drop is 50 feet and width is over 200 feet. The people hiking the
opposite shoreline give you a sense of scale..... Our last day took us back to Au Train via Twelvemile Beach and Grand
Sable Lake (notice the bear proof garbage cans!), and a side trip to the
Kitchi-iti-kipi Spring. Craig was operating the raft that floated us across
the crystal clear 40' deep spring. Definitely worth the visit! All in all, it was a great weekend of snowmobiling and sightseeing,
despite a few snags. Total snowmobiling distance traveled was 320 miles and
we were blessed with Lake Effect Snow every day preceding and during the
trip! Stay tuned for next year, it could be a biggie;-) |
